SRU THEATER DEPARTMENT TO OFFER
SHAKESPEARE’S ‘HENRY IV, PART I’
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa
– “Henry IV, Part I,” held by many to be
Shakespeare’s greatest history play, will be staged for seven
performances by the Slippery Rock University theater department as
it opens its 2006-07 season in Miller Auditorium.
The play’s
curtains are at 8 p.m. Oct. 6, 7, 9-11, with 2 p.m. matinee
performances Oct. 7-8. The setting for the production is
environmental, with a combination of chairs and floor cushions as
audience seating. Tickets are $5 for chairs and $3 for a floor
cushion, and may be reserved by calling the Miller Auditorium Box
Office at 724-738-2645.
The play is based
loosely on the unstable reign of King Henry IV of England, who came
to rule by dethroning Richard II. King Henry not only
struggles with keeping his kingdom from being overthrown by rebels
led by Hotspur; he also struggles with keeping his son, Prince Hal,
from being trapped in a life of idleness, thievery and lies by his
less-than-virtuous friend Falstaff.
King Henry
will be played by Jeff Feola, a theater major from New Castle, with
Buddy Wickerham, a secondary education major from McMurray as
Hotspur, Matt McNear a theater major from Beaver, as Prince Hal,
and Dennis Whalen a secondary education major from Connoquenessing,
as Falstaff. “Henry IV” is filled with political
scandal, battle, romance, and some of the funniest comedy
written.
Dr. David Skeele,
professor of theater, directs the production and Gordon
Phetteplace, associate professor of theater, is designing the set.
Students involved in the technical aspects include props master
Kelly McBane of Pittsburgh, stage manager Michelle Rimmer of
Hershey, and lighting designer Braden Blauser of Parker.
