SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Stephen Hawk, associate professor of music, will celebrate the release of its fourth CD “Crossing Borders” in its first campus concert following a successful summer European tour in a public concert set for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11.

The concert will be in the University Union. Admission is $3 for the general public; free for SRU students.

The 18-member ensemble was invited to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Switzerland as part of the summer tour that also took them to Paris and Germany. Selections for the CD were recorded just before the ensemble left for Europe. Copies of the CD will be available at the concert and are available at the SGA Bookstore (or may be ordered on line at: sgabookstore.com/merchandise).

The concert will feature selections from the CD, including “Big Dipper,” by Thad Jones, and “Afro Blue,” made famous by John Coltrane. The concert will feature Dr. David Glover, SRU assistant professor of music, as special guest for a drum set on “Groove Assai.” Other selections "Tall Cotton," from the Count Basie Orchestra library, featuring senior trombonist, Nick Deutsch of Pittsburgh, "Groove," from the Maynard Ferguson library, which will feature trumpet soloist Will Weltman of New Castle, and "Big Swing Face," from the Buddy Rich library, which will feature junior drummer and president of the SRU Jazz Ensemble Justin Chesarek of Renfrew.
