Moving Concepts: Free movement education program offered to preschool-age children

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Children ages 3 through 5 throughout the region are being offered a free, on-campus movement activities program at Slippery Rock University titled “Moving Concepts” set for 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursdays in the Morrow Field House beginning Feb. 1.

The inclusive program, designed for preschool-age children with and without disabilities, will be rich in developmentally appropriate movement experiences centered around themes of body awareness, space awareness, effort, relationships to others, and character counts involving age-appropriate fundamental motor skills, said Marybeth Miller, assistant professor of physical education.

The class will offer a series of child-centered movement activities important to a young child’s development. “The program is an on-campus service-learning, educational movement program anchored to a physical education class and will allow SRU teacher candidates in physical education, special education, early childhood education and elementary education to provide safe instruction promoting social skills among children,” Miller added.

Children participating in the SRU Child Care Center’s Thursday morning program are also invited to join in. For further details call Miller at 724-738-2789.

Slippery Rock University is Pennsylvania’s premier public residential university.
