Anna Sokolow dancers
to perform free concert Jan. 20 at Slippery Rock
University
SLIPPERY
ROCK, Pa. –Eight
dancers from the Anna Sokolow Archive Company will bring their
stirring moves to Slippery Rock University for a free performance
Jan. 20 at SRU’s Miller Auditorium. The Boston-based company
specializes in choreography exploring past and present social
issues. The performance begins at 8 p.m.
The
troupe will present “Rooms,” a psychological ballet and
“Dreams,” a visual expression of outage at the
Holocaust.
“Their
art is extraordinary. We are honored to have the opportunity
to host this historically significant company,” said William
McKinney, dean of SRU’s College of Humanities, Fine and
Performing Arts, who arranged the performance.
The
company honors the legacy of Anna Sokolow (1910-2000), a modern
dance pioneer. Her chorography explored the pressing issues
of her day, such as the Great Depression, the Holocaust and the
1960s youth movement. In addition to choreographing for her own
renowned New York company, Players' Project, her works have been
performed in England, the Netherlands, Israel and
Mexico.
SRU offers a
dance major and minor, with more than 100 students in the
major.
SlipperyRock University is
Pennsylvania’s premier public residential university.
Slippery Rock University provides students with a comprehensive
learning experience that intentionally combines academic
instruction with enhanced educational and learning opportunities
that make a positive difference in their
