Slippery Rock University adjunct instructor dances way onto Dance Magazine’s '25 to Watch' list

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –Teena Custer, adjunct dance instructor and 2000 Slippery Rock University graduate, is featured as part of Dance Magazine’s 25 to Watch in its January edition cataloguing the hottest dancers and trends in the country.

Custer, who graduated with a bachelor degree in dance, specializes in hip-hop and contemporary dance. She is working on a solo hip-hop dance theater show she plans to perform this May in London.

The magazine published a photograph of Custer and cited her involvement with the Columbus, Ohio-based Columbus Movement Movement Dance Company. Columbus Movement  Movement was in the magazine’s 25 to Watch list.

“The dance company got the attention of one of the Dance Magazine writers, and he came out to see one of our shows,” Custer said. “There are many members of CM2, but I was honored to be the one chosen to represent the organization.”

This is the second consecutive year SRU was represented in the magazine. Dance faculty Ursula Payne appeared in the 2006 edition because of her involvement with This Woman’s Work, a  national collaborative involving Payne and six other African-American female choreographers.

Recalling her undergraduate education at SRU, Custer said, “Each faculty member has had a great impact on my growth as an artist, but, Ursula Payne is still a true mentor for me. Her guidance has helped me get to this point in my career.”
