‘Take 5’ concert features Symphony Wind Quintet, Faculty Jazz Quintet

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s annual “Take 5” concert featuring the Symphony Wind Quintet and the Faculty Jazz Quintet will be at 4 p.m. Feb. 11 in Swope Recital Hall.

The free event, sponsored by the music department, provides an opportunity to hear SRU faculty and other artists in concert.

The Symphony Wind Quintet, featuring Stacey Steele, assistant professor of music, on flute, Gary Purifoy, music instructor, oboe, along with Charles Norton, clarinet, Mary Gibbon, bassoon, and Denise Mintier, French horn, opens the program with an arrangement of W.A. Mozart's “Serenade.” The group will also perform “Petite Suite” by Claude Debussy and the contemporary “Six Riotous Rhymes” by Trevor Cramer. Norton, Gibbon and Mintier are members of the Butler County Symphony.

Five compositions by Terry Steele, associate professor of music and founding member of the SRU Faculty Jazz Quintet, will be featured by the quintet. The selections are “Cuban Underground,” “Nevicata,” “Foxy Pagels,” “The Lydian Bridge” and “Sambalento.” In addition to Steele on saxophone, quintet members are Steve Hawk on trumpet, Steve Snyder, piano, Jeff Mangone, bass, and David Glover, drums. Steele will retire at the end of the academic year after 32-years service.
