Mardi Gras celebration features music, masks and merriment

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Mardi Gras, Slippery Rock University-style, will be celebrated Feb. 16 as part of the University’s International Arts and Cultures series.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Let’s Dance.” The celebration will be from 9 p.m. to midnight in Carruth Rizza Hall and will feature the music of Afrika Yetu and Don Na. The SRU event brings together the myriad elements of Mardi Gras from different cultures that have shaped this global holiday.

Mardi Gras, French for “Fat Tuesday,” is traditionally celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday as a last fling prior to the 40 days of Lent that precede Easter. It will be celebrated nationally Feb. 20.

In the spirit of the celebration, participants are urged to dress in Mardi Gras colors and to bring their own mask – or make one at the event. The official colors for Mardi Gras are purple, green and gold. Chosen in 1872 by the King of Carnival, Rex, the colors represent justice, faith and power.

The department of modern languages and cultures, Office of International Services, University Program Board, Student Government Association Late Night programs and the SRU French Club are sponsoring the event.
