Lieutenant Colonel Patrick A. Callahan enlisted in the US Army in February, 1988 as an 11M (Bradley Mechanized Infantryman). After attending Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to 5-18 IN, in Friedberg, West Germany. He served as an infantryman, M577 operator, and driver for the Brigade Command Team until February 1990 when his enlistment was completed.
LTC Callahan was commissioned from Georgetown University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from The American University in May 1992. After attending the Officer Basic Course, he was assigned to 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Bliss, Texas. He served as assistant Operations Officer, Platoon Leader, and Company Executive Officer during his tour that included numerous gunneries and an operational deployment to Kuwait during the fall of 1993.
LTC Callahan attended the Armored Officers Advanced Course during the spring of 1996. Upon completion, he was assigned to 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division until July, 2000. During his time at Fort Benning, Georgia, LTC Callahan served as the assistant Brigade Operations Officer (Deployment), Battalion Logistics Officer, Tank Company Commander, and Headquarters Company Commander. During this time period MAJ Callahan deployed to Kuwait on several occasions (Operation Desert Fox and Intrinsic Action).
During the summer of 2000 LTC Callahan was appointed the United States Liaison Officer to the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst (United Kingdom). For a 24 month period, LTC Callahan was responsible for the training and commissioning of British cadets into the British Army as well as the training of British doctors, lawyers, chaplains, and nurses into the professional branch of the British Army.
In 2002, LTC Callahan became the G3, 24th Infantry Division (FWD) at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. His duties included the training readiness, oversight and evaluation of three enhanced separate Brigades from the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. This included the 30th BCT (North Carolina) training for Operation Iraqi Freedom during the fall, winter, and spring of 2003-2004.
While attending CGSC at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 2004-2005, LTC Callahan earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University. LTC Callahan moved to Fort Bliss, Texas to become the Squadron Executive Officer of 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry as part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Bliss, Texas. He deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom in October, 2006-December, 2007. While there, he served as the Squadron Operations Officer in Mosul and Tal Afar, Iraq. He was responsible for conducting combat operations against Al Qaeda; overseeing humanitarian operations in Ninewah Province; training Iraqi Army forces, and conducting counter-insurgency operations with the Iraqi Security Forces along the Syrian border.
MAJ Callahan’s awards/decorations include: Combat Action Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (x 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (w/ Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (w/ Oak Leaf Cluster), Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (w/ combat award), Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd Award). He is a graduate of the US Army Airborne School and the US Army Air Assault School.
LTC Callahan has been married for 15 years and has a daughter and son.
