Captain Richard Coleman enlisted in the US Army Reserves in November 1991 on the delayed entry program. He attended Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sill, OK in the summer of 1992 and graduated a Fire Direction Specialist (13E) in November 1992. In May 1993, he came onto active duty and was assigned to A Btry 1-5 FA, 155 SP at Ft Riley, KS where he served from May 1993 to May 1998. He was then assigned to B Btry 2-17 FA, 155 SP Camp Hovey, Korea from May 1998 to May 1999. From Korea, he was stationed at the New Cumberland Army Depot in PA with the 2-315th FA, AC/RC where he served from May 1999 to September 2001.
In November 2001, CPT Coleman attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in February 2002. He attended Field Artillery Officer Basic Course in March 2002 graduating in August 2002. Upon Graduation of the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Captain Coleman’s was assigned to 1-14 FA, MLRS in Ft Sill, OK. He would deploy with them in March 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom participating in TF Bullet. In January 2005 he was assigned to 2-2 FA, M119T at Ft Sill, OK serving as Fire Direction Officer and Executive Officer. CPT Coleman attended the Field Artillery Captains Career Course in August 2005, graduating in December 2005. His next assignment was to 2-315 FA, AC/RC with duty at Ft Dix, NJ where he served as Team Chief mobilizing National Guard units deploying in support of OIF/OEF from January 2006 to December 2007. In January 2008, CPT Coleman was assigned to Ft Riley, KS to conduct training as part of a Military Transition Team (MiTT). He deployed to Iraq in March 2008 to coach, teach and mentor his Iraqi counterparts on Military and Civil operations. Upon redeployment, he was assigned to Slippery Rock University Army ROTC Department on 15 April 2009.
Captain Coleman’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with four Oak Leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal (1 Bronze Service Star), Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, the Airborne badge, and the Combat Action badge. Captain Coleman's affiliation is the Field Artillery and has earned the Order of Saint Barbara.
