Liberal Studies Program Committee

Old Main—Room 304

January 30, 2007

Attendance:  Langdon Smith, Jace Condravy, Sharon Sykora, Donald Zapien, Deborah Wells, Chris Kreiser, Catherine Massey, Julie Snow

Guests:  Bill Williams, Bill McKinney, Lori Zulauf

L. Smith called the meeting to order at 2:05 p.m.

I.  Old Business

A.      Approval of minutes from November 14, 2006

L. Smith called a motion to approve the minutes from November 14, 2006.

First:  J. Condravy

Second:  C. Massey

II.  New Business

A.      L. Zulauf from the Department of Professional Studies requested Committee approval

of a change in course number for three courses:  American Taxation,  Personal Financial Planning, and Economics of Social Issues.  This change reflects a departmental, not curricular change.

All approved, motion passed.

B.      LSPC Assessment Plan:  Discussion of Committee policies implementing the new

assessment plan.

C. Kreiser brought a sample assessment form before the Committee.  Several suggestions were made.  Namely, it was decided that the assessment details provided should relate directly to the liberal studies outcomes identified for the course, making the assessment documents very straightforward.  Also, the Committee decided that the assessment documents should stand alone.  Therefore, any attachments should serve as secondary sources only. It was also decided that assessment submissions must be made in person.  Therefore, the Committee agreed to create a more precise calendar of assessment submission deadlines, along with a document detailing helpful tips for assessment submission

Several questions about the assessment forms/assessment process were also discussed, such as:  What is the goal of assessment for the Committee?  How much additional material (outside of the assessment forms) is needed?  Should entire rubrics be placed in the assessment forms, or just language?

Finally, the Committee decided that the Assessment Forms Document should contain only the forms themselves, not the entire Assessment Document.

.

C.  Liberal Studies Five-year Program Review

L. Smith updated the Committee about the self-study report, the review process, and scheduling  interviews for Dr. David Starrett, the external reviewer.  Several suggestions were made for Dr. Starett’s visit.  A final itinerary is forthcoming.

D.  Physical Education

            L. Smith informed the Committee of concerns within the Physical Education Department

concerning the liberal studies designation attached to PE148, a course previously

dropped from the liberal studies program.  It was decided the designation should also be

            dropped.

L. Smith called a motion to adjourn the meeting.

First:  J. Condravy

Second:  C. Massey

All approved, motion passed.

Adjourned, 2:30 p.m.

Recorded and submitted by Katie Thomas (GA)
