‘Topic Tuesday’ discussion series offers women helpful advice

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –  Women interested in understanding how technology aids stalkers or how to enjoy a safe spring break, should check out “Topic Tuesdays” a new initiative from Slippery Rock University’s Bridge Project.

SRU launched the Bridge Project in partnership with the Butler County Victim Outreach Intervention Center in 2002. Since its inception, the project, which works to minimize violence against women, has provided nearly 200 education programs, six campuswide events and training for student health services, University and borough police, and judicial programs staff.

The University received a $228,952 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to add group discussions and a freshman orientation component to the project this year. The latest series of lectures was the result of student and faculty surveys that identified topics of major concern.

Michelle Garcia from the National Center for Victims of Crime will discuss how technology, including the use of popular Internet sites Facebook and MySpace, is being used by stalkers Feb. 27.The lecture is co-sponsored by the SRU Women’s Center.

A discussion group will meet March 6 to share information on “Safe Spring Break,” including examination of sexual assault/rape, use of alcohol, safety precautions necessary, how to help a friend who's been victimized and what to do if victimized.
May 1, the topic is will be “Relationship 411, College Dating.” Jessie Barbati, campus advocate from VOICe, and Karla Fonner, project coordinator, will discuss healthy vs. unhealthy relationships, ways to "fight fair," how to help a friend and where to go when involved in an abusive relationship.

The free programs are at 7 p.m. Tuesdays in Strain Behavioral Science Building.

For further details contact the Bridge Project at Ext. 2121.
