Political Science Film Night presents ‘Who Killed the Electric Car?’

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –  “Who Killed the Electric Car?,” a film that chronicles the life and mysterious death of GM’s EV1, will be shown by the Slippery Rock University political science department at 8 p.m. Feb. 27 as part of its ongoing Political Science Film Night series.

The showing is in Spotts World Cultures Building Auditorium.

The film examines the car’s cultural and economic ripple effects and how non-production reverberated through the halls of government and big business. According to Mark Daniels, political science professor, the car was among the fastest, most efficient production cars ever built. It ran on electricity, produced no emissions and catapulted American technology to the forefront of the automotive industry. The car had a waiting list for those who wanted to lease it. Refueling stations were built throughout California and Arizona, all leading to the question, “Why did General Motors crush its fleet of electric vehicles in the Arizona desert?” Daniels said.

The film not only deals with the EV1, but how the project became the allegory for failure being reflected in today’s oil prices and air quality.

A display case, on the first floor of Spotts, provides additional information.

Pizza and soft drinks are offered before the showing. A discussion will follow.
