Nine fraternities, sororities step up for ‘Divine Nine Step Show’

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Divine Nine Step Show at Slippery Rock University will feature nine campus fraternities and sororities demonstrating and competing in a dance form that combines elements of military drills, contemporary jazz and hip-hop moves.

The show is at 7 p.m. March 31 in the University Union.

Steppers use their bodies as drums by clapping and slapping their hands against various body parts and stopping their feet to produce a rhythm and synchronized dance. The dance-art form is a traditional part of many African-American fraternities and sororities.

Participating Greek organizations include four sororities, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho, and five fraternities, Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Beta Sigma and Omega Psi Phi.

The program is free for SRU students, $10 for non students.

Slippery Rock University is Pennsylvania’s premier public residential university. Slippery Rock University provides students with a comprehensive learning experience that intentionally combines academic instruction with enhanced educational and learning opportunities that make a positive difference in their lives.
