Political science professor named ACLU Volunteer of the Year

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Daniel McIntosh, associate professor of political science at Slippery Rock University, has been named the 2006 Volunteer of the Year by the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. McIntosh logged more than 300 hours of service, giving lectures and helping organize ACLU events.

Staff selected McIntosh and honored him at the ACLU’s annual meeting at the David Lawrence Auditorium of the University of Pittsburgh Law School.

“I believe in protecting the Constitution, and I am afraid it’s under attack by some these days,” McIntosh said. Founded in 1925, the ACLU works to preserve liberties as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

ACLU Pittsburgh Chapter Director Barb Feige said staff selected McIntosh because of his helpful attitude and “the depth and breath of the knowledge he has as an educator.”

“The volunteer of the year tends to be us asking who was there every time we turned around this year, someone who was really on the ball,” she said. “The thing about Dan is he’ll do student-speaking engagement, mailings or anything that we need.”

McIntosh joined SRU in 1994. His academic specialty is international relations. He teaches “International Security,” “International Politics,” “Foreign Policy” and “International Law.” He received his bachelors from the University of Missouri at Columbia and masters and doctorate from the University of Denver.
