Hannam named dean of SRU’s College of Health, Environment, Science

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University President Robert Smith has named Susan Hannam, interim dean of SRU’s College of Health, Environment and Science since January 2005, to fill the dean’s position following a national search.

“Dr. Hannam clearly has shown her leadership during the past 17 months. After reviewing all of the exceptional candidates, she was clearly the best candidate to fill the post,” Smith said. “She is certainly qualified and has the vision to head this expanding college on our campus. Her skills, determination and qualifications as an academic leader have been visible to all. I welcome her to the dean’s post, and I know she will continue to be a great asset to our University.”

“I certainly thank President Smith and Provost [William] Williams for their confidence. I have enjoyed serving as interim dean and look forward to additional growth and challenges as we move forward. I will begin meetings with all of the department heads in our college as we continue to map plans for the future. My vision is, and remains, to make ours one of the premier colleges of health, environment and science in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. We will pursue that goal with vigor,” Hannam said.

SRU’s College of Health, Environment and Science serves 2,268 graduate and undergraduate students. As dean, Hannam will oversee approximately 145 faculty and staff in the departments of biology; chemistry; exercise and rehabilitative sciences; geography, geology and the environment; health and safety; mathematics; nursing; parks and recreation/environmental education; physics; psychology; and the School of Physical Therapy. She is also responsible for the administration of the Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems Education and Research and the Storm Harbor Equestrian Center.

Hannam received her bachelor’s degree from Acadia University, and her master’s of science in physical education and her doctor of health and safety degree from Indiana University. She served as chair of SRU’s department of exercise and rehabilitative sciences from 2001 to 2005. She joined the faculty in 1987 as an instructor in allied health and rose through the ranks as assistant, associate and full professor.
