Free ‘Classical Music from India’ concert Wednesday at SRU    

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Kala Ramnath, considered among the most outstanding instrumental musicians in the North Indian classical genre, will present a free violin concert of Indian classical music at 7 p.m. Wed., April 25, as part of the Slippery Rock University International Arts and Cultures Series.

            Ramnath will be joined by Prithwiraj Bhattacharjee on tabla, a traditional drum set from India.The concert is in the Maltby Center.

            Ramnath began her studies at age 3 under the guidance of her grandfather and aunt. She has won numerous awards, prizes and honors and is a familiar performer at most music festivals in India and throughout her home region.

            Bhattacharjee also began his training as a child, taking his first lessons at age 7. He too has performed solo concerts and traveled extensively throughout India accompanying a number of respected India artists.

            The concert is sponsored by SRU’s College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, Office of International Services, and the departments of English, music, dance, philosophy, modern languages and cultures, and computer science.

            Sharadchandra Joshi, professor of computer science, organized the visit.
