Senior dance majors take ‘Last Call at the Barre’ Saturday

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – “Last Call at the Barre,” a production of the Slippery Rock University dance department, will showcase the work of senior dance majors in their last campus concert Saturday. Performances are at 5 and 8 p.m. in Swope Music Hall.

The senior synthesis concert includes dances developed during months of research and exploration by the choreographers. Senior dance major Rachel Renock of New Kensington will perform a solo, choreographed by Meredith Koloski,  SRU ’99. Renock’s work culminates her research on professional soloists.

Technology will be used in Lauren Plesko’s piece to represent her research into the philosophy and creative process of famous choreographers such as Merce Cunningham and Alwin Nicholai. Plesko is from Lower Burrell.

Each show concludes with a dance featuring senior dance majors choreographed by guest dance faculty member Tom Truss in a work titled “Going - in 3 sections."

“’Going’ is a response to two questions I asked the seniors: ‘What kind of dance do you want to be in?’ and ‘What's on your mind these days?’” Truss said. The result is a fast-paced, humorous work performed to the music of Steve Martland, dance department accompanist.

"Our students must do advanced-level research in their senior synthesis course. This research must be connected to a creative project. Therefore, the dances seen here are a result of a sophisticated research and creative process.  I am very proud of these students and love the fact the concert has such a wide variety of dances," Nora Ambrosio, department chair and professor of dance, said.

Tickets, on sale now, are $2 for students and the general public.
