SRU students win Society of Safety Engineers scholarships

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Two Slippery Rock University safety and environmental management majors have been awarded scholarships from the American Society of Safety Engineers. Jacqueline Harvey, of Horsham, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship, and Jessica Vrabel, of Johnstown, was awarded a $1,200 scholarship and a $1,000 award from the Northwest Pennsylvania Chapter of ASSE.

“Both of these students are outstanding young women in our program,” Joseph Cali, professor of health and safety, said. “These women are excellent in the classroom, and their performance in projects has been exemplary. I expect both of them to do very well in the field.”

Corporations, members and individuals fund the ASSE scholarships. This year, ASSE will distribute more than $88,000 in undergraduate and graduate scholarships at its annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition in June in Orlando. The society generates and produces resources for scholarship, applied research, academic accreditation and related academic initiatives in order to advance the safety, health and environmental profession.

Harvey received the America Responds Memorial Scholarship honoring ASSE members lost in the September 2001 attacks.

Vrabel received the $1,000 Arthur A. Bola Memorial Scholarship and one of two, $1,200 ASSE Foundation/Practice Specialty PDC Scholarships.

“I am very pleased to have been selected,” said Vrabel, secretary of the campus ASSE chapter. To qualify for the awards she and Harvey submitted transcripts and wrote essays. “We wrote about our experiences in class and in projects we have undertaken. We also cited the growing opportunities in the field,” Vrabel said.
