John A. Hicks retired from Slippery Rock University in 2002, following nearly 30 years of service. He has experience as a teacher from grade seven through graduate education. His wife, Judith, covered the elementary years. their son, John, and daughter, Laura, also received degrees from Slippery Rock University, where their parents met and graduated.

Dr. Hicks attended Brandeis University, John Carroll University, Kent State University, and Penn State University. On the way, he labored in a cement plant, in a glass factory, on a railroad, a nursery, a demolition/salvage company, the post office, and as student assistant to the Dean of Men at Slippery Rock University.

He was a teacher, coach, and administrator in the schools of East Cleveland, Ohio. He was named "Coach of the Year" by the Cleveland Wahoo Club, following his baseball team winning the Ohio State Championship. Arriving in the Slippery Rock community, he coached Colt, Pony, and American Legion teams for several years.

Dr. Hicks has been called "an advocate for public school teaching." He was a board member and served in leadership roles for two national associations for teacher education -- ATE and AACTE; representing ATE at the ATE Europe Conference in Bruges, Belgium. Dr. Hicks has served on many state and national policy-making committees for education.

He rose to the rank of Sergeant in the Army Security Agency, a branch of N.S.A., serving in Germany; he also traveled widely in Europe and North America.

His administrative experience began as President of his class at Plum High School in the Pittsburgh suburbs. He held several interim administrative positions -- Dean, Associate Dean, Director of Continuing Education, and others. For his final 11 years, he served as Assistant to the Dean of Education.

Dr. Hicks has the dubious distinction of playing varsity for two universities and was well known on the amateur baseball teams of western Pennsylvania. He is a senior member of the Slippery Rock University Sports Hall of Fame, and feels that Slippery Rock University is uniquely equipped to develop young persons with "strong minds and strong bodies."
