Slippery Rock University seeks volunteers, campers for Camp Shriver program

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University is seeking campers and volunteers to help run its Camp Shriver program, named for Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver. The free, two-week camp offers children with mental retardation and children without disabilities the opportunity to develop their skills in basketball, bocce, kickball and swimming.

The camp sessions, for children 8-16, are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 9-13 and July 16-20. Lunch will be provided and special events such as horseback riding, softball games and free attendance at the Slippery Rock Sliders’ July 17 baseball game on campus are included.

Volunteers function as camp counselors, helping the campers through the sports skills stations, said Robert Arnhold, professor of exercise and rehabilitative sciences. Volunteers must be high school students or older and commit to one or both weeks of camp.

SRU formed a partnership with Shriver and Special Olympics earlier this year and is one of the test sites for the Camp Shriver program being offered this across the country this summer. The program focuses on developing athleticism, friendship and fun.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver is a sister of the late President John F. Kennedy.

To volunteer or enroll, call Arnhold at 724-738-2847.
