SRU experience helps graduate land Federal Emergency Grant

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Larry Boggs, a May 2007 Slippery Rock University exercise science and biology graduate, used his exercise science education to write a Health and Wellness Assistance for Firefighters Grant, offered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, that has garnered $61,000 for the Stoneboro (Pa.) Volunteer Fire Co.

“The grant has been used to purchase $40,000 in aerobic, resistance and assessment equipment,” Boggs said. “The remaining money will provide physicals and immunizations for our 28 active members. It will also support a public nutrition seminar presented by SRU's Wendy Stuhldreher, SRU professor of health and safety, and a smoking cessation program by the Pennsylvania Department of Health as well as other incentives.”

Boggs said he was contacted by classmate David Sachs, a 2006 SRU graduate, who knew of his fire service interest. Boggs then contacted Jeffrey Lynn, assistant professor of exercise and rehabilitative science at SRU, who lent a hand and helped with assessing the firefighter’s physical fitness.

“By using the experiences I gained through the “Worksite Wellness” class and my internship at Verizon Wireless, I was able to determine our needs and compile a successful proposal that addressed those needs,” Boggs said.

His next task is to perform assessments and create exercise prescriptions for the firefighters.

“My class work at SRU in exercise physiology, exercise prescription, exercise leadership: strength fitness, the seminar in strength and conditioning, and my senior synthesis prepared me for the task,” he said.

Boggs’ next plan is to earn his ACSM's certified personal trainer certification.
