Exercise Science Society collects 1,165 food items during drive

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- It took just 13 SRU exercise science majors to coordinate a two-week campaign that collected 1,165 canned goods and non-perishable food items in a food drive that will benefit local residents who rely on the Feed My Sheep Food Cupboard in Slippery Rock.

The food will be shared with members of the Slippery Rock community during the upcoming holiday season. The drive was organized through SRU’s department of exercise and rehabilitative sciences.

The effort was initiated by the Exercise Science Society, a student-led organization of 300 majors. “The entire department challenged students and faculty to reach a goal of 1,000 cans,” said Susan Herman, assistant professor in the department. “The reaction was ‘Wow’ when 10 carloads of food were delivered this week,” Herman said.

Students involved in organizing the drive were: Amanda Miller from North Huntingdon; Erin Kelly from Butler; Gene Galbreth from Hudson, Ohio; Bethany Vankirk from Murraysville; Tom Goldinger from Kittaning; Brittany Mikec and Meghan Nixon, both from Washington; Audrey Eggers from Beaver Falls; Dan Johns from Conestoga; Deron Sferra from Greensburg; Meredith Velez from Wheeling, W. Va.; Sean Kantola from New Castle; and Lisa O’Brien from Pottstown.
