SRU offers ‘Moving Concepts’ class to pre-schoolers

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A “Moving Concepts” inclusive program for preschool-age children is being offered to the Slippery Rock University community from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Thursdays beginning Jan. 31 as part of Marybeth Miller’s “Movement Education” class at SRU.

The free sessions in Morrow Field House are for children ages 3-5.

“This is an inclusive program designed for preschool-age children with and without disabilities, which is rich in developmentally appropriate movement experiences centered on themes of body awareness, space awareness, effort, relationship to others and using Character Counts program themes. The program will emphasize the elements of cooperation intertwined with fundamental motor skills,” said Miller, an assistant professor of physical education.

SRU teacher candidates in physical education, special education, early childhood education and elementary education enrolled in Miller’s “Movement Education” class will assist with the weekly service-learning program.

The program is aligned with the Pennsylvania Department of Education Early Learning Standards for Pre-Kindergarten and will include an array of child-centered movement activities important to a young child’s development.

Those interested in enrolling their child or needing further information should contact Miller at 724.738.2789.

Children already scheduled to attend the SRU Child Care Center on Thursday mornings are also urged to enroll in the program.

Slippery Rock University is Pennsylvania’s premier public residential university. Slippery Rock University provides students with a comprehensive learning experience that intentionally combines academic instruction with enhanced educational and learning opportunities that make a positive difference in their lives.
