SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A 2008 Chinese New Year Celebration will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Feb. 9 at the  Newman Center. Slippery Rock University’s new Chinese Culture Association and the Modern China Group are sponsoring the event.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Black History Month kicks off at Slippery Rock University Friday and offers events ranging from carnivals to examination of “The Truth Behind Hip Hop” and a visit by Queen Quet, Gullah Geechee national chieftess who will explain her nation’s culture.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Almost 1,100 high school world language students from 33 regional high schools will invade Slippery Rock University campus Feb. 19 to participate in the department of modern languages and cultures annual “World Languages Competition.”

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s psychology department will sponsor the showing of two documentaries and a panel discussion to help raise awareness about eating disorders and issues involved in providing treatment at 6 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Kathe House Posey, a 1979 Slippery Rock University graduate and sixth-grade teacher at Mount Union-Kistler Elementary School in Mount Union, has been named Teacher of the Year in Pennsylvania in the 12th annual Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club State Teacher of the Year program.

» Combat photographer brings war photos to SRU for lecture, workshops
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Forty powerful and dramatic photographs from the streets of Iraq and Afghanistan will be displayed in Slippery Rock University’s University Union Feb. 7-13 when Russell Lee Klika, a Marine Corps and National Guard combat photographer, brings his works to campus for a series of lectures and workshops.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University will join hundreds of college campuses and other American cities in celebrating the 10th anniversary of Eve Ensler's Obie Award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues” by performing the work in February.

» 'Lost Boy of Sudan' SRU graduate becomes American citizen
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Gabriel Ajang, a May graduate of Slippery Rock University and “Lost Boys of Sudan” survivor, has become an American citizen. He took the oath of allegiance during a naturalization ceremony last week in Pittsburgh – seven years after arriving in the U.S. following unbelievable hardship in his native country.

» Slippery Rock University presents five MLK Civil Leadership Awards
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Students, staff and a community member were honored Monday with Slippery Rock University’s 2008 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Civil Leadership Award for their demonstrated support of civil rights, advocacy for social justice and demonstrated leadership in motivating others toward an understanding of, and quest for, civil rights and social justice for all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation age or ableism.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –Two Slippery Rock University vocal performance majors were featured soloists in a televised performance of Handel’s Messiah presented over the holidays by the Blazing Star Choral Society in Succop Theater, Butler.

» 'Vagina Monologues' playwright Eve Ensler lectures at SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Eve Ensler, playwright/performer/activist and award-winning author of “The Vagina Monologues,” will speak at Slippery Rock University Feb. 26. Her talk will focus on global efforts to stop violence, particularly against women and girls. The free, 12:30 p.m. address in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall is sponsored by SRU’s College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts and the University’s Women’s Studies Program.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s Financial Aid Office is offering a free financial aid assistance program Feb. 9 to help college-bound students complete the first step for accessing financial aid for college – filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Contactless technology has come to Slippery Rock University’s 9,500 students, faculty and staff thanks to a small tag about the size of a postage stamp. Now it’s spreading beyond the campus community to Grove City, Butler, Ellwood City and further as merchants realize its conveniences.

» SRU dance department offers Saturday children's programs
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.  – The Slippery Rock University department of dance is offering an 11-week Saturday dance program for children ages 3-12.  Classes will meet Saturdays, Jan. 26 to April 19 (except March 8 and 15) in the McKay Education Building Dance Studio.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.  – A limited number of tickets remain available for Philadanco! The Philadelphia Dance Company’s Feb. 8 performance at Slippery Rock University. The trailblazing group of contemporary dancers will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Miller Auditorium.

» SRU president earns Butler Health System board appointment
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Robert Smith, president of Slippery Rock University, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Butler Health System board of trustees. The system includes Butler Hospital, its foundation and two medical practice groups.
