SRU dance department offers Saturday children’s programs

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.  – The Slippery Rock University department of dance is offering an 11-week Saturday dance program for children ages 3-12.  Classes will meet Saturdays, Jan. 26 to April 19 (except March 8 and 15) in the McKay Education Building Dance Studio.

            Classes offered are:

  • Creative dance for ages 3-4, 9:30-10 a.m. Cost $50.
  • Creative dance for kindergarten and first graders, ages 5-6, 10:15-11 a.m. Cost $60.
  • Tap, jazz and hip hop for ages 7-12, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost $70.

This program is non-competitive.  There will be informal studio showings (therefore, no costumes to buy) for parents and friends at the end of each 11-week session. The focus of the program will be on teaching, exploring and learning.

Darcey Karas of Baden and Jennifer Eckenrode of Zelienople will teach the classes.

“Studying dance allows children to learn many concepts, such as spatial awareness, cooperation, organization skills and problem-solving in a creative way, and dance promotes self-expression and communication,” said Nora Ambrosio, SRU dance department chair. “Dance also provides an excellent physical experience for all participants, and helps to increase strength, balance, coordination and flexibility.”

To register, call the dance department at 724.738.2036.
