SRU stages ‘Vagina Monologues’ for sixth straight year

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University will join hundreds of college campuses and other American cities in celebrating the 10th anniversary of Eve Ensler's Obie Award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues” by performing the work in February.

The play is based on interviews with more than 200 women, both domestic and international, who reveal personal triumphs, trials and tribulations related to sexuality and being female, said Julaine Field, associate professor of counseling and development and project organizer.

“The Vagina Monologues” has been translated into more than 45 languages and is presented in theatres around the world, including sold-out runs both Off-Broadway and on London's West End.

SRU students, faculty and staff have presented the play annually since 2003. This year’s performance is being co-directed by Alexandra McNeill a political science major from Pulaski, and Marilen Ilagan, a theatre major from Mount Pleasant.

“The Vagina Monologues” will be performed at 8 p.m. Feb. 7-9 in Swope Music Hall. Tickets may be purchased in advance from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Jan. 31, Feb. 5 and Feb. 7 in the University Union and will be available at the door.

The work has inspired a grassroots movement among women known as “V-Day” designed to end violence against women.

In a separate program, Ensler will speak at SRU Feb. 26. Her talk will focus on global efforts to stop violence, particularly against women and girls as part of her support for V-Day, which she founded. The free, 12:30 p.m. address will be in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall.
