The Young Alumni Awards were created in 2005 by the SRU Alumni association to recognize alumni from each of the four colleges – Education; Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts; Health, Environment and Science; Business, Information and Social Sciences. The criteria for the awards are that the alumni must have graduated within the past 20 years from SRU; demonstrated a commitment to success in his/her personal and professional life and excellence in his/her career since graduation. Alumni are nominated by alumni, faculty and staff of each of the four colleges and submitted to the Office of Alumni Relations. This award was designed to recognize the talents of younger alumni.

Each recipient is honored at the annual SRU Alumni Association Scholarship and Awards Banquet.

Criteria for Nomination:

  • Must be a graduate of SRU with either a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
  • Current members of the SRU ALumni Association Board of Directors, the Distinguished Alumni Award Committee and employees of SRU may not be considered for this award.
  • Nominees must have graduated at least 20 years or less from Slippery Rock University.
  • MUST be present to accept the award at the SRU Alumni Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet at (an alternate will be selected in the event that the first person cannot attend).
  • All nomination packets must include the following by the announced deadline:
    1. Complete the nomination form. To receive a copy of the nomination form, please contact the SRU Office of Alumni Relations at 724.738.2018 or e-mail alumni@sru.edu.
    2. In no more than two pages, please detail in a Nominator's Statement the nominee's qualifications for this award, based on the specific criteria required for the award.
    3. You may also submit newspaper articles, clippings, photographs and additional materials as part of the nomination packet. Please do not send originals as these materials will not be returned.
    4. Nominations may be made by anyone except the nominee.
  • The selection of the recipient is made by the Alumni Awards Committee and approved by the Alumni Association Board of Directors and the President's Office. A maximum of four awards will be presented annually.
  • The Award recipient and nominators will be notified by march and will be recognized at the annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet in April.
  • The record of a nominee shall be maintained in a carry-over file and considered for five years, after which a person must be re-nominated to be considered. If during that time they become a graduate of 20 or more years from SRU, they will become eligible for nomination for the Distinguished Alumni Award.
  • All forms and materials should be sent to the Alumni Award Committee, Alumni Relations, 1 Morrow Way, Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
  • Please contact the SRU Office of Alumni Relations at 724.738.2018 to receive a nomination form.

Additional Information:

  • the recipient should prepare a brief statement to present at the annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet.
  • The nominee should submit a current resume or curriculum vitae to the Alumni Awards Committee within a week of being alerted of their nomination.
  • The recipient should be prepared to submit a professional head shot photograph to be used for publicity purposes by SRU. Please no family snap shots or e-mail submitted photographs.

Definitions:
Personal and Professional Achievement: use of traditional or innovative approaches in enhancing personal and professional growth. Other factors include personal recognition received, the balance between personal and career movement and development, professional recognition, professional accomplishments and significant contributions to nominee's profession.
Community Service: scope and breadth of service nominee has provided; the impact of his/her actions on the community in a variety of service initiatives.
University Service: nominee's support of University initiatives, involvement in University programs and/or service on University boards or committees or project teams.
Philanthropy: annual and lifetime giving to Slippery Rock University.
