SRU psychology department sponsors eating disorders program

 

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s psychology department will sponsor the showing of two documentaries and a panel discussion to help raise awareness about eating disorders and issues involved in providing treatment at 6 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall.

           There is no charge to attend, but donations will be accepted and forwarded to the National Eating Disorders Association.  

            The films to be shown are: 

           >“Dying To Be Thin,” produced by NOVA and Public Broadcasting System, which explores the increased prevalence of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. It also examines factors that contribute to the development of these disorders; and 

           “Thin,” an HBO documentary, which follows four women struggling with eating disorders in a Florida residential treatment center. The film examines the challenges they face in getting access to appropriate levels of care.

            Discussion panelists will be:

           Carol Holland, associate professor in the SRU Counseling Center;

           Joyce Ainsworth, mental health program director for Butler County;

           Rebecca Ringham, inpatient program director for eating disorders at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic; and 

           Manuel Reich, associate medical director at the Value Behavioral Health;

           Jennifer Sanftner, associate professor in the SRU psychology department, will serve as moderator.
