SRU students capture words of local World War II veterans

SLIPPERY ROCK -- A dozen Slippery Rock University students have launched a project to interview local World War II veterans in an effort to capture their stories. The students will use the stories to create a book detailing the veterans' experiences.

The service project, sponsored by SRU's Institute for Community, Service-Learning and Non- Profit Leadership, is being coordinated by Christopher Schilling, a senior communication major from Georgetown who is also an AmeriCorps volunteer at the University.

A copy of the book will be sent to the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

"This project is a great opportunity for SRU students to help preserve the stories of those who fought to defend America in one of the most notable moments in American history," Schilling said.

American Legion Post 778 in Butler and Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople are assisting the students by helping make connections with the local veterans.

Lia Paradis, an assistant professor of history, is helping the students with their interviewing and writing techniques. The students will also design the book, which they hope to complete in May.

In addition to Schilling, SRU student writers include history majors Collin Cook from Erie, Benjamin Burnett from Harrisville, Ian Emmett from Slippery Rock, Danielle Lapresta from Uniontown and Natalie Hall from West Sunbury; political science majors Timothy Busi from Slippery Rock and David Hewitt from Grove City; English majors Megan Doerfler from Warrendale and Christy Trotnick from McMurray; and secondary education majors Lucien Holness from New Castle and Stefanie Zoldak from Homer City.

Those with questions should call the institute at 724.738.2273.
