SRU's C. Vivian Stringer receives Embrace Kids Foundation honor

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- C. Vivian Stringer, coach of the Rutgers University women's basketball team and a 1970 and 1973 Slippery Rock University physical education graduate, will be honored for her inspiration and leadership by the Embrace Kids Foundation in Edison, N.J., at its annual dinner/auction April 17.

Stringer, who is the subject of the back cover feature "I am the Rock" in the just-released winter issue of The Rock magazine, has been the Rutgers' women's basketball coach since 1995.

In announcing the award, Glenn Jenkins, executive director of the foundation, said, "Coach Stringer's story is inspirational and fits right into our mission and goals. Her will to persevere and excel is the kind of motivation that we want to bring to our sickle cell programs."

Stringer has taken three college women's basketball programs to a Final Four showing in her 37 years of coaching.

She is a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and the SRU Athletic Hall of Fame. She is a recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award from the SRU Alumni Association.

The Embrace Kids program is a non-profit organization that raises funds for pediatric sickle cell. Proceeds from the dinner/auction are used to expand transitional programs for pediatric sickle cell patients as they move from adolescents to adults.

Stringer is going for her 800th win tonight when Rutgers takes on DePaul -- a feat only accomplished by two other women coaches -- Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee and Jody Conradt formerly at the University of Texas. Five men's basketball coaches have reached the 800 mark.
