SRU students promote ‘Lifesteps’ project to aid child development

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A free Child Check screening, sponsored by Lifesteps, a local non-profit organization for individuals and families in western Pennsylvania, will be offered from 1-6 p.m. Monday at All Saint’s Lutheran Church, 351 S. Main St. The program is being organized by five Slippery Rock University students.

            The program is open to children in the Slippery Rock area ages six months to five years.

            Child Check helps identify delays in a child’s development, focusing on areas such as play, vision, hearing and talking. Appointments are recommended, but not required. To schedule a screening or to learn more about the program, call Lifesteps at 724.283.2154, Ext. 313.

            The screening helps kick off “Week of the Young Child,” a celebration created by the National Association for the Education of Young Children to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families. The program also recognizes early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

            The SRU communication majors organizing the event as part of their public relations campaigns class have arranged for arts and crafts time for participating children and the SRU mascot Rocky will make an appearance. 

            Students organizing the event are April Aven from New Castle, Christie Talik from Aspinwall, Bridget Kelly from Poland, Ohio, Christina Watson from Pittsburgh, and Kattie Platte from Elizabeth.
