Post-Baccalaureate Admission

Post-Baccalaureate options are available for students who have completed a bachelors (4-year) degree from an accredited college/university.  Students who pursue post-bac work at SRU will focus their education on specific courses of interest or academic major curriculum only.  Liberal Studies coursework is not a requirement for students possessing a bachelor's degree. Prospective Post-Baccalaureate students interested in teacher education certification programs should read the message below prior to seeking admission.

Teacher Education Certification Programs

Students who have an undergraduate degree or a certification in another area and who currently wish to obtain an initial or second certification at the undergraduate level must apply concurrently to Slippery Rock University Office of Admissions and to the Slippery Rock University College of Education by completing the Post-baccalaureate Application for Admission to Teacher Certification Programs as well as the Post-Baccalaureate Application for Admission

The requirements for admission to the program include:

  •  A 2.8 cumulative QPA at the time of graduation from an undergraduate or a 3.0 cumulative QPA from a graduate degree program. Please see the text in bold below.
  •  Passing Praxis I scores
  •  Clear (no record) Act 34 and 151 reports
  • A negative TB screening

Post-Baccalaureate applicants who do not possess a 2.8 QPA from a previously awarded undergraduate or a 3.0 QPA from a graduate degree are not eligible for admission to a teacher education program at Slippery Rock University.  The option of enrolling and improving one’s quality point average at Slippery Rock or another institution without receiving a baccalaureate or graduate degree is not available. Students may not seek admission through another program at Slippery Rock and transfer via a change of major or other mechanism into a teacher education certification program at Slippery Rock at a later date.

Post-Baccalaureate students who meet the quality point average requirement may be admitted and enroll for up to 12 credits with an in-progress Post-baccalaureate Application for Admission to Teacher Certification Programs (for example, Praxis I taken but scores not yet reported).  However, students may not register for additional credits without having been admitted to teacher education.  Candidates in a post-baccalaureate program will be required to maintain a 3.0 QPA and to pass the Praxis II specialty and content area tests prior to being recommended for certification.  A minimal grade of C or higher must be earned in all coursework.

Students without an initial teaching certificate must take at least 30 program credits at Slippery Rock University to be recommended for Pennsylvania certification; students seeking an additional certification area must take a minimum of 15 program credits at SRU to be recommended for Pennsylvania certification.  Specific programs may have additional or different requirements that are listed on the candidate’s guide sheet.  Individual departments and the College of Education reserve the right to accept or reject any coursework submitted as equivalents to program courses.

Once accepted as a post-baccalaureate candidate, no courses may be applied from another institution to meet certification requirements.  Candidates enrolled in a post-baccalaureate program are permitted five years to complete the certification requirements, including 2 math courses (Math 113), an English comp course (Eng 101), and an English lit course (Eng. 210) for all initial certification areas if not completed in a previous degree.

Special Admission is granted to non-degree seeking students interested in completing coursework for personal enrichment who have not previously earned a bachelor's degree.
