SRU’s MS3 graduates get national PBS attention for green projects

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Those tuning into a recent national edition of  PBS’ The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer may have caught Slippery Rock University sustainable systems graduates Jeff Jaeger, Greg Boulos and Joe Jenkins in the  story detailing how Grow Pittsburgh Braddock’s Urban Farm Project is becoming an eco-showcase for green technologies and jobs.

            The story, “Green Industry Hub Rises from Rust Belt Ruins” by Paul Solman, NewsHour economics correspondent, examined how an area can recover from a “rust-belt” economy. It included a segment on the Braddock Project headed by Jaeger, who received his master’s degree from SRU in 1995.

           The story also focused on Steel City BioFuels, whose co-founder was Greg Boulos, a 2005 SRU sustainable systems master’s degree recipient and a 1999 SRU English graduate. A segment in the report detailed “humanure,” and made reference to Joe Jenkins’s book “The Humanure Handbook.” Jenkins is also an SRU MS3 graduate.

           “SRU's leadership position in this emerging new field was showcased very well in this report,” said Chris Leininger, an instructor in SRU’s parks and recreation/environmental education department.
