Photography: Using a Digital Camera Photog

The workshop will include a brief discussion on the different types of digital cameras and what might be right for you. We will learn how to handle difficult photographic situations including low light, full sun and action photos. We will have both indoor and outdoor picture taking opportunities followed by a demonstration on how to use a card reader and download your photos onto a hard drive. Please bring your camera and card, extra batteries and a tripod if available.

The course will consist of some basic botany, covering things such as roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds. Also included will be information on variations of these plant parts. Why might one thank a green plant? We get from plants, in addition to food: lumber, dyes, beverages, spices, oils, and the list goes on! As time permits, we will talk generally about each of these.

This fat-quarter friendly design combines a variety of dark and light fabrics to create a dazzling pattern in 3 color values. This pattern combines several techniques such as making and using a template, curved piecing and bias seaming. Patterns must be purchased from the instructor at a cost of $8. Butler County native Rube Waddell was one of the first real drawing cards in baseball. He was a power pitcher who, in spite of his erratic behavior, managed to set many records. This presentation will focus on his life and the social impact of his career to Western Pennsylvania.

The Silk Road: Italy to Vietman GrSilkRd

The historic Great Silk Road established economic relations between Europe and Asia, facilitating the exchange of ideas, goods, and crafts. Early merchants traveled from Italy to China and brought back silk, porcelain, paper, tea, powder, crafts and medicinal preparations. During their travels, the merchants encountered various customs, philosophies and religions. This class is based on early travelers’ descriptions of their visits to the countries along the silk road: Italy, Greece, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizia, Mongolia, China and Vietnam. We will discuss the expeditions of famous travelers such as Marco Polo and some of the knowledge, customs and ideas they brought to Europe.

Back by popular demand, this class focuses on gentle stretching designed to increase flexibility for the over-50 crowd. The goal is to manage better the natural stiffness we all experience from time to time, whether from aging, arthritis or injury. The class is taught using chair support for all sitting and standing poses.
