» Deliberative Poll at SRU finds marriage an emotional, personal issue
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Nearly 70 percent of Pennsylvania voters who participated in a statewide Deliberative Poll support the legal recognition of same-sex relationships, either through marriage or civil unions, according to results released last week following sessions at four sites across commonwealth, including Slippery Rock University. Results from the SRU site show 70 percent of the participants support the proposed amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Apryle Barta, a Slippery Rock University political science major from Cairnbrook, is working for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in Harrisburg as part of a 15-week internship sponsored by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

» 'Lies My Teacher Told Me' author offers historical truths at SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – James W. Loewen, sociologist and award-winning author of “Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History Textbook Got Wrong” and “Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sties Get Wrong” among others, will lecture at 3 p.m. Oct. 8 in Slippery Rock University’s Advanced Technology and Science Hall.

» Fall enrollment hits all-time high
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – For eight years in a row, Slippery Rock University has seen enrollment grow. This year’s 15th-day benchmark saw 8,325 students enrolled, an increase of 1.2 percent compared to last year.

» Physics majors study at Brookhaven National Laboratory
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.  ­– Slippery Rock University physics majors Bradley Kirkwood, Brock Lauer and Joseph Yarzebinski recently conducted liquid crystals research at Brookhaven National Laboratory, a prestigious Upton, New York facility that specializes in biomedical and environmental sciences research.  Access to the lab is usually granted only to Research 1 faculty and post-doctoral students.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Institute for Community, Service-Learning and Nonprofit Leadership at Slippery Rock University will host its 13th annual Empty Bowls dinner Sept. 29. The event is intended to increase hunger awareness and provide funds for local hunger organizations.

» Women's soccer team ranked third by NSCAA
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Rock women's soccer team matched its best-ever mark Tuesday when it earned a No. 3 ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II national poll. The team plays IUP at 7 p.m. today in N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Ellen Foster, a graduate of Slippery Rock University’s master of arts in English program, has seen her article about the cancer-patient play and movie “Wit” published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The annals, one of the most prestigious medical journals in the world, is read by physicians worldwide.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Sharif Bey, a 1998 Slippery Rock University bachelor of fine arts graduate with a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina and a doctorate from Penn State University, will offer a lecture titled “A Personal Journey in African American Art History” at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in SRU’s Spotts World Culture Auditorium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University students will celebrate a campus Green and Growing Program milestone Sept. 26 when they dedicate the Student Government Association’s new campus pavilion and plant the final two of 100 new trees purchased with a Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections Grant.

» SRU reaches out to help local storm victims
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The remnants of hurricane Ike that blew through the area Sunday evening left a trail of downed trees and power lines in its wake. Although Slippery Rock University’s main campus did not lose power, many students, faculty and staff living in the surrounding area found themselves “in the dark.” While some areas are back online, as of this morning, Allegheny Power was reporting that more than 32 percent of its customers in Butler County were still without power and that service to most of these customers will not be restored until Friday or Saturday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Nike, the Oregon-based footwear company, has paid tribute to women’s basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer, a 1970 and 1973 Slippery Rock University graduate, by naming a child development center after her. The facility includes a wing for toddlers called The Rock.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s new graduate program in adapted physical activity has received a four-year, $773,990 grant from the U.S. Department of Education/Office of Special Education Programs to support 11 graduate students a year with full-tuition scholarships. SRU’s program prepares graduates to help people with disabilities lead healthier, more active lives

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems Education and Research at Slippery Rock University will offer a “Solar Power for Water Pumping Workshop” from 1-5 p.m. Sept.  20. Participants will learn the basics of how to pump water using the power of the sun.

» SRU hosts 'Deliberative Poll on the Issue of Marriage in America'
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – When California voters head to the voting booth in November they will be deciding a referendum that would ban same-sex marriage in their state. Earlier this year, a group of Pennsylvania legislators introduced the Marriage Protection Act, which proposed a similar ban in the commonwealth, although that legislation ultimately stalled.

» SRU freshman earns Furniture Galleries Scholarship
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Eric D. Rensel, a freshman from Butler, has been awarded the Furniture Galleries Scholarship established by Alan and Patti Offstein, owners of Furniture Galleries Carpet One Floor & Home. The scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to Furniture Galleries Carpet One employees and their families pursuing an education at Slippery Rock University. 

» New Classroom Activity Center benefits SRU education majors
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. ­– Slippery Rock University education majors have a helpful new resource at their disposal – a Classroom Activity Center in Bailey Library. The facility includes more than 1,000 hands-on learning kits covering an array of topics, from “The Wonder of Birds,” “Civil War,”  “Model Rocketry” to “Geometric Figures and Solids.”

» Alumnia becomes coordinator of Wyoming training center
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Jennifer Lasik, a 1999 Slippery Rock University graduate, is the new coordinator of The South Lincoln Training and Event Center in Kemmerer, Wyo. Her duties will include working to secure funding for the center and scheduling business conferences, weddings and banquets. She starts Oct. 1.

» Environmental center launches Critter Quest PA Web site
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Educational information about black bears, bald eagles, bog turtles and more than 400 other Pennsylvania “critters” is now a mouse click away. The Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education, housed at Slippery Rock University, has launched Critter Quest PA, an interactive Web site (www.pcee.org).
