What is Gerontology?

  • Gerontology is the study of aging and includes psychological, biological and social dimensions.
  • Research in gerontological issues has dispelled many myths and stereotypes typically associated with older adults.
  • More work in this field is needed to help maintain and improve the quality of life for this population.

Why study aging?

  • Satisfaction in helping to improve and maintain the quality of life for older adults.
  • Opportunity to provide a positive influence on policies and regulations involving the elderly population.
  • Increasing number of families in need of assistance.
  • Increasing number of jobs related to working with the elderly.
  • Career opportunities in aging include many disciplines and professions.
  • Job opportunities available in community agencies, long term care facilities, hospitals, senior citizen living and recreation facilities, and other public and private systems.

SRU Gerontology

  • Program was established in 1979 and includes an undergraduate minor, undergraduate certificate, and a graduate certificate.
  • Minor/Certificate is designed to provide a specialization in aging for persons pursuing their degrees at SRU.
  • Curriculum was developed based on the standards of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE).

Application Process

  • Complete the Gerontology Admission Application form AND a minor declaration form which are available at the Gerontology Program office located in 216G Strain Behavioral Science Building, Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
  • Applications are also available by telephone (724) 738-2050.
  • To be eligible for admission students must have a cumulative QPA of at least 2.5
