World dance provides focus for SRU dance concert
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s dance department concludes the semester with two showcase concerts of student works at 1 and 4 p.m. Saturday in Swope Music Hall. The concerts will include international dances.
Special guests include students from Jaya Mani’s “World Dance” class who will perform a classical Indian dance form called “Bharatanatyam.” Mani is a dance instructor.
The Rock Dance Company, a student group dedicated to children’s performances, will present choreography by guest artist Mark Taylor.
Student choreographers joining the concert will offer a range of modern dance works. The choreographers have participated in a rigorous creative process during fall semester under the artistic direction of Payne, professor of dance at SRU.
Participating choreographers include Amber Allgyer from Leola, Lisa Bavisotto from Amherst, N.Y., Amanda Blankenship from Kane, Tina Forder from Branchville, N.J., Marissa Lang from Beaver, Eileen Martini from Merritstown, Jennifer Meckley from Crosby, Jill Michalsky from Chester Springs, Leah Musto from Kingston, Jillian Peterson from Fawn Grove, and Angel Streitman from Butler.
The SRU dance department is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Dance.
Tickets are $5 general admission; and $3 for SRU students at the door. Pre-event tickets will be available from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Dec. 2 and Dec. 4 in the Morrow Field House Lobby. For more information, call the department at 724.738.2036.
