Two SRU students spearhead ‘Rally for Unity’ campus event

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Two Slippery Rock University student leaders, Deron Jackson from Clairton and Rachel Garland from Verona, have organized a campus “Rally for Unity” as a means for members of the campus and community to demonstrate their commitment to improving campus culture.

“The purpose of this event is to rally together and pledge to be advocates for change, dealing with diversity issues, awareness and education,” Jackson and Garland said. “Together we can all take a stand for change and unite for this cause. During this time of adversity on campus, we feel that it is important that all students, faculty and staff address these issues, regardless of race, sex or sexual orientation. The rally will allow us to come together and make a statement.”

The “Rally for Unity” will be Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at Old Main at 6:45 p.m. “We’ll begin at Old Main and continue to march around campus through the newly constructed residence halls. Our march will end in the Quad,” Jackson and Garland said.

At the Quad, the Chosen Generation Gospel Choir will offer a selection and several individuals will speak. “If anyone would like to make short remarks (two minutes or less), they should e-mail me at Djj7909@sru.edu before the event,” Jackson said.

“I’m very proud of our students for taking the initiative to organize this rally,” SRU President Robert Smith said. “I know this is a very busy time, but I encourage all students, faculty and staff who can attend to do so.”
