Rock students qualify for PASSHE honors program in France

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University students Jenny Langenhahn and Bethany Kling have been chosen to participate in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Summers Honors Program. They will study abroad in France and spend five days in May discussing European history, politics and culture at Shippensburg University.

PASSHE uses a competitive application and interview process to select two students from each of its institutions for the prestigious program. Langenhahn is a geography and philosophy major from Pittsburgh. Kling is an undeclared major from Jamestown, N.Y.

Both students will receive scholarships covering tuition, room and board and travel expenses.

“This will be my first time visiting mainland Europe. I definitely look forward to interacting with many new people and gaining insight in their way of life,” Langenhahn said.

“Each time I try something new I learn about myself a little more,” Kling said. “During the trip, I will be learning about the European way of life and how I can adapt to it. With this new knowledge, I will gain from this trip both academically and personally. I will try to utilize this knowledge as I take the next step in my life.”

Since its inception in 1985, the PASSHE honors program has provided an academic experience for 28 of its most gifted students annually. The program focuses on academic rigor and issues that are central to academe and society.

Shippensburg, the host institution this year, and will offer condensed classes in  “European Identity in the Middle Ages” and “European Politics in the Modern Area” before the trip.
