SRU plans 16th annual Kids’ Day at College for fourth graders

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.  -- The Institute for Community, Service-Learning, and Nonprofit Leadership at Slippery Rock University will host its Kids’ Day at College April 4 as a way of providing 150 local area fourth graders a taste of the college life at The Rock. CANCELED

            This year’s event, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., celebrates the program’s 16th year.

Kids’ Day at College is designed to spark children’s interest in higher education. The fourth graders will bring one parent with them so they can learn together what higher education is all about.

The program offers students the chance to attend two classes - art, history, television production or newspaper reporting – during their SRU visit. Accompanying parents are offered the opportunity to take classes dealing with various aspects of college, including financial aid, and drug and alcohol awareness.

Sarah Steele, a communication major from Cranberry Township, is coordinating this year’s project.

The registration fee is $15 per child and parent, and includes a T-shirt and lunch for both. To register, call the institute at 724.738.2273.

Through civic-engagement and a focus on community service and service-learning initiatives, the institute works to develop civic-minded, socially responsible citizens by instilling the ability and desire to connect personal strengths, academic preparation, personal passion and community resources for purposeful action.
