SRU adds new leadership track to masters in secondary education 

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Starting fall semester, Slippery Rock University’s department of secondary education/foundations of education, will offer a master of education degree track in education leadership for those interested in school principal positions.

            The advanced teaching track in educational leadership is a master of education degree for those who already have teacher certification. The track was approved by SRU’s Curriculum Committee.

            “In addition to core courses, these certified teachers will concentrate in educational leadership by electing 14 semester hours of coursework. Graduates of the program will be eligible for principal certification,” said Edwin Christmann, professor and chair in the department.

            He said his department launched plans for the new track last fall and consulted with John Hoyle, professor of educational administration at Texas A&M University who lent a hand in creating the curriculum for the new track.

            The program’s course options include “Organizational Leadership,” “Leadership and the Administrative Process,” “Strategic Leadership,” “School Community Relations and Politics of School Governance,” “Measurement and Assessment in Schools,” “Philosophical Foundations of Education,” “Social Foundations of Education,” “History of Western Education,” “Crucial Issues in Education,” “Univariate Statistical Methods,” “Elements of Qualitative Educational Research,” “Elements of Quantitative Educational Research” and others.

            Those enrolling must bring with them a 3.0 grade-point average or higher. Standard GRE or MAT scores are also required as part of the application.

            The new track joins the department’s basic teaching track and its advanced teaching track.
