Good News: 6/29/09: PSAC names SRU's Jen Blasko Scholar Athlete of the Year
Jen Blasko, a standout on the Slippery Rock University women's volleyball team and a May graduate, was named today as the 2008-09 female recipient of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Pete Nevins Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

Michael J. Mastroianni, a 1988 Slippery Rock University sport management master’s degree recipient, has been named director of athletics and student activities at the Quaker Valley School District in Coraopolis.

Charles Sanders, a 1986 Slippery Rock University graduate, and his wife, Elisa, have had their Pittsburgh-based business, Urban Settlement Services Inc., ranked as one of the Top Black Businesses in the country by Black Enterprise Magazine.

The Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education, housed at Slippery Rock University, has received the Green Handed Award for its Web site from Principals for Change, a non-profit organization that supports greening education.

Greg Cooper, a 2008 Slippery Rock University sport management master’s graduate, has been named assistant athletic director for facilities and event management at St. Edward’s University.

Good News: 6/23/09: SRU professor showcases adapted program in Sweden
Robert Arnhold, professor of exercise and rehabilitative sciences at Slippery Rock University, has been invited to represent North America at this week’s International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity in Gavle, Sweden. Arnhold will present SRU’s methods for training students as Special Olympics coaches.

Good News: 6/25/09: SRU graduate earns two awards for bravery
Clint Deniker, a 1991 Slippery Rock University graduate and Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife conservation officer, has received the Carnegie Hero Fund Medal and the Governor’s Award for Excellence for saving the life of a motorist trapped in a burning car. The Carnegie Medal includes a $5,000 award.

Ham radio operators offer public demonstration at Old Stone House
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Local ham radio operators from the Butler County Amateur Radio Public Service Group will construct emergency radio stations and demonstrate amateur radio for the public at Slippery Rock University’s Old Stone House from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 27 and noon to 5 p.m. June 28.

SRU trustees discuss budget challenges
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University President Robert Smith today told the Council of Trustees that the number one issue facing the University was budget planning for 2009-10. “The only thing we know for certain at this point is that we will have a deficit, we just don’t know the total scope of the problem,” Smith said during his report at the trustees’ quarterly meeting.

SRU sees involvement possibilities with vision sports camp
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s upcoming Tuesday through Friday VIP Sports Camp will provide 50 children who are blind or visually impaired the opportunity to participate in swimming, track and field, horseback riding and other sports not typically available to them.

Slippery Rock University launches RecoveryCorps Program
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.– Slippery Rock University has received a $549,534 grant to expand its AmeriCorps program to the Northside of Pittsburgh and Beaver and Venango counties. More than 100 students and community residents will be placed with 28 service agencies, with work focusing on meeting the needs of families in economic distress.

SRU's Art Sculpture Building casts bright future for students
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s new $1.25-million Art Sculpture Building will be completed in October, giving students a larger and more efficient facility for creating works in clay, metal, wood and other materials. The educational benefits will be many, including high-tech Internet connections, lecture hall and new computers with three-dimensional applications.

SRU's renovated Boozel Dining Hall wins design award
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s $7.5 million renovation to Boozel Dining Hall, the primary, on-campus student dining facility, has been a culinary success with students since its January opening and has now captured the American School and University Magazine’s Educational Interiors Showcase Outstanding Design Award in the cafeteria/food service areas category.
