Biking the Little Beaver Greenway Trail BkLBGTrl
G. Warren Smith
The path of the former Erie Lackawanna Railroad line, this rail-trail parallels the Middle Fork of Little Beaver Creek, between historic Lisbon and Leetonia, Ohio. It features glacial outwashes, upland fields, mature ravine woodlots and wetland wildlife habitats. Remnants of its industrial past dot the trail with the remains of lime kilns, pig iron furnaces, coal mines and coke ovens. It features a covered bridge and connection to the Sandy Beaver Canal Towpath. The trail is blacktop, about 12 miles long and 10 feet wide, and most of the trail is level to a gentle grade. For a more complete description of the trail, see: http://www.bicycletrail.com/gwt-home.htm. Bring your own bicycle, food and water. Recommended: a spare tube and air pump. Required: a helmet.

Cemetery Tour: Allegheny & Homewood Cemeteries
Thomas Hannon
The cemetery as a cultural landscape has experienced several evolutions since the frontier era in U.S. history. It began as an isolated burial place for transient and semi-transient pioneering folk, and moved through the period of the family and church-related cemetery to the public or community type. Each evolution reflects demographic, design, and perceptual changes in the society in which it is found. Distinct design differences exist between the two cemeteries, and both contain the final resting places of Pittsburgh's elite. Bring $10 for admission and a bag lunch and drink. Fee covers transportation by motor coach.
