Note: The World Health Organization has classified the H1N1 (swine flu) outbreak as a global pandemic. Consistent with recommendations by national public health official, all SRU classes, activities and business operations continue as scheduled.

SRU vigilant in H1N1 monitoring, planning

Slippery Rock University administration and health officials are closely monitoring the H1N1 (swine flu) outbreak and working with local, state and national public health officials to ensure the University is prepared to respond. Our goal is to protect the University community by reducing transmission between and among faculty, staff, students and visitors.

We urge you to stay informed of the latest developments regarding H1N1. Since information about the outbreak is constantly changing, please check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc.gov/h1n1 for the most updated information.

Common symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. If you have a fever higher than 100 degrees and other symptoms, call your doctor (students should contact Student Health Services at 724.738.2052). If you are ill, stay away from others for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever or signs of a fever.

A vaccine is currently being tested and hopefully will be ready for the public sometime this fall. Once the vaccine is available, SRU will follow CDC guidelines for distribution.

All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to always be vigilant about basic ways to protect their health:>

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or cough or sneeze into your elbow. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and hot water, especially after you’ve coughed or sneezed or been out in public. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle through rest, diet, exercise and relaxation.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Keep frequently touched common surfaces clean, such as remote controls, keyboards, phones, doorknobs, and refrigerator handles
  • Avoid sick people.
  • If you get sick, stay away from others. Do not go to class or work.
  • Get vaccinated when vaccine is available.
