SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University community will have three opportunities to help fight breast cancer this month and learn more about the importance of screening and early detection.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Jack Hanna, director-emeritus of the Columbus [Ohio] Zoo and Aquarium, will lecture and show various animals at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Slippery Rock University’s University Union.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University, a pioneer in sustainability education, will join colleges and universities across the country Wednesday in celebrating the seventh annual Campus Sustainability Day.

» SRU hosts 'Sisters in Healthcare History Project' exhibit
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The first major exhibit of the Slippery Rock University Sisters in Healthcare History project – an artifact tribute to the hundreds of unheralded Roman Catholic sisters who cared for the sick between 1847-1969 – will be staged from Oct. 27 to Nov. 20 at SRU’s Martha Gault Art Gallery. The grand opening will be 6 to 8 p.m. the first night.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -Slippery Rock University’s historic Old Stone House will once again host Halloween festivities this fall, with thrills ­- and chills - for visitors of all ages. This year, two separate nightly programs will be offered Oct. 23-24 and Oct. 30-31.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Facing a potential $9 million budget problem in 2010, Slippery Rock University Tuesday launched a Web site documenting budget challenges and encouraging faculty, staff, students and others to share their best thinking about ways the University could increase revenue or cut expenses.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Jessamine Jovelina Mozo Montero, Slippery Rock University’s special assistant to the president: senior officer for diversity and inclusion, will be recognized with a Minority Achievement Award at the 35th Annual Minority Achiever’s reception sponsored by Talk/Minority Opinion Magazine.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – William G. “Gus” Pagonis, a retired three-star U.S. Army general recognized for his logistical achievements during Desert Shield/Desert Storm and now vice chairman of the board of directors for Pittsburgh-based Genco, will bring his expertise to Slippery Rock University’s “Success Starts Here” speaker series Oct. 27.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –Working with adolescents 15-21 years old in a New Castle detention center as part of their clinical work, six Slippery Rock University students have seen firsthand how music therapy can bring about changes in lives of young people and will now share their findings at the sixth annual Mid-Atlantic Passages Conference in New York.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Faculty and staff, as well as Slippery Rock University students, are now just one phone call away from the NEXTbus. The Student Government Association recently installed a new computer system on the campus buses it operates to help SRU become more environmentally friendly while providing up-to-date bus stop information.

» SRU receives $251,222 for sexual assault prevention work
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University has received a $251,222 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to support The Bridge Project, a prevention program focusing on eliminating violence against women. The three-year grant will also fund an increased University police presence on campus and provide in-car computer equipment.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s theatre department will combine rock and romanticism in its upcoming, six-production adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline,” opening Oct. 16.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University Council of Trustees today as part of their regular meeting presented a resolution honoring the University’s Adapted Physical Activity Program for its nationally recognized leadership and declared Nov. 11, 2009, as Adapted Physical Activity Day at SRU.

» Wind power workshop offers clean alternative
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. ­– Slippery Rock University’s Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems Education and Research will offer two sessions of a “Wind Power 101 Workshop,” from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. Oct. 24. Participants will learn strategies for reducing their home and business utility costs and decreasing environmental impact.

» SRU's Spanish, French programs receive national acclaim
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s secondary-education programs in Spanish and French have been named programs of distinction by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages. The recognition means the programs meet national standards of excellence and that SRU students demonstrate advanced foreign language skills.

» Regional Learning Alliance marks five years
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Regional Learning Alliance learning and conference facility, conceived and developed by Slippery Rock University, will mark its fifth anniversary of service with an open house reception from 3-5 p.m. Oct. 15 at the facility’s Cranberry Woods home.

» SRU marks Hispanic/Latino Month with artist, scholar lectures
SLIPPERY ROCK, PA. -- Slippery Rock University will celebrate its eighth annual Hispanic/Latino Month throughout October as a way of illustrating the wealth and diversity of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world through music, literature, cinema, art, dance, food and the media. Campus events will include lectures by artist Roberto Alberto and scholar Antonio Cortijo from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

» Boozel earns Dining Hall of Distinction honor
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s Boozel Dining Hall has been named a runner-up in University Business magazine’s Dining Halls of Distinction recognition program and will be featured in this month’s edition. Only 12 dining halls nationwide were selected. The program honors excellence in all aspects of operations, including variety of entrees, satisfaction, atmosphere and sustainability.
