‘Inspecting Carol’ opens SRU holiday season 

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Daniel Sullivan’s “Inspecting Carol,” an uproarious farce complete with holiday turns and tunes, will be presented by the Slippery Rock University theatre department Dec. 1-6 in Miller Auditorium.     

    The play, directed by Laura Smiley, assistant professor of theatre, harkens to the early ’90s and revolves around a thoroughly dysfunctional theatre company and its production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Caro.”

    Faced with hilarious dilemmas at every turn, the company attempts to perform a classic Christmas play in the most untraditional of circumstances.

    The play includes a cast of 12, with 10 theatre majors, including seniors Alex McGee from Shaler, as Mary Jane Mcmann; Garret Dush from Brookville, as Wayne Wellacre; Jackie Freeman from Geneva, Ohio, as Zorah Bloch; Susan Marie Lemon from Grove City, as Dorothy Tree-Hapgood; Zachary Nading from East Brady, as Phil Hewlitt; and Alex Hollock from Butler, as Larry Vauxhall; junior theatre major Matthew Buzanoski from Butler as Bart Francis; sophomore theatre majors Kevin Moore from Aliquippa, as Walter E. Parsons; and Alexis Stanford from Philadelphia, as Betty Andrews; and freshman theatre major Nick Benninger from Butler, as Sidney Carlton. Also in the cast are Nicholas Kochanov, a senior vocal performance major from North Huntingdon, as Kevin Emery; and J. Jon David, a freshman English, secondary education major from Grove City, as Luther Beatty.

    Gordon Phetteplace, associate professor of theatre, is the play’s lighting designer, Rebecca Morrice, assistant professor of theatre, the costume designer, and Michael Boone the technical director.

    Other technical elements are being handled by senior theatre majors Dan Cummins from Pittsburgh, as scenic designer; Megan Nye from Utica, as sound designer; Krista Vogler from Hudson, N.H., as properties mistress; Neen Carmichael from Erie, as stage manager and Stacie O’Hara, a junior dance and theatre major from St. Mary’s, as assistant stage manager. 

    Curtains are at 8 p.m., except for the 2 p.m. Dec. 6 matinee. Ticket prices are $5 for students with ID; $10, general admission. 

    Tickets will be available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30-11:30 a.m. beginning Monday. Tickets will also be available one hour before the show at the Miller Auditorium Box Office.
