SRU’s SGA Child Care Center receives $93,920 funding grant

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –The Slippery Rock University Student Government Association Preschool and Child Care Center has been approved for a $93,920 four-year funding grant from the U.S. Department of Education to provide child-care financial assistance to qualifying student parents.

The program was authorized by the Higher Education Amendments of 1998 to assist universities and colleges across the country improve child-care access for student parents. The recent allocation is the program’s second such grant.

The Child Care Access Means Parents in School Grant applications for funding were competitive.

The center’s mission to serve the child-care needs of the SRU community will be enhanced greatly with this grant, said Cathy George, SGA business manager.

“Student parents will better be able to balance their educational and family goals without the financial burden and worries about child-care costs,” George said.

Student parents must be full-time undergraduate students who are Pell Grant eligible.

Qualifying families may receive financial assistance with before- and after-school care, full- or part-time childcare and summer childcare for children ages 3-12.

The center, located in McKay Education Building and headed by Lisa Ringer, operates 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

The center currently has slots available for the summer and the fall 2010 semester. The registration deadline is April 15.

For additional information, contact Ringer at 724.738.2102.
