SRU ‘FACULTY AND GUEST ARTIST’S DANCE CONCERT’
TO FEATURE VARIETY OF DANCE FORMS, STYLES
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University dance
faculty will share the stage with guest artists from Kent State
University, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, including
artists-in-residence Attack Theatre from Pittsburgh, as part of the
annual “SRU Faculty and Guest Artist’s Dance
Concert” at 8 p.m. Oct. 19.
Tickets to the Miller Auditorium event are $5, general
admission; $3 students. The annual concert will offer a variety of
dance forms and styles.
Highlighting the concert will be Attack Theatre, a
Pittsburgh-based professional modern dance company. Excerpts from
“Boxed In,” choreographed by Attack Theatre artistic
directors Peter Kope and Michele de la Reza, examines contemporary
social issues and features narrative video, live music and
physically daring partnering providing pure balance. This work,
which premiered earlier this in year in Avignon, France, is
enhanced by Pittsburgh dancer Jill Stifel and an expanded cast of
SRU dance majors.
Guest artists will be Wayne Smith, a dance faculty member at
KSU, and Lynn Deering and Carey Kelly, both of Dance Theatre
Collective in Cleveland.
Dance works by SRU dance faculty include: “Leap of
Faith,” a testament to the strength and bravery of
individuals unafraid of taking risks, choreographed by dance
department chair Nora Ambrosio and performed by faculty member
Ursula Payne; and “Pulse,” choreographed and performed
by Jennifer Keller, recent recipient of Pittsburgh Magazine’s
Harry Schwalb Excellence in the Arts Award, which rebounds between
speed and stillness accompanied only by the sounds of her breath
broadcast through a wireless microphone.
Also planed is “Masculine Effect,” created and
danced by Payne, which portrays her journey as an African-American
female, conditioned by a patriarchal society reclaiming her power
– a statement about womanhood and truth, and a classical East
Indian dance performed by Jaya Mani, visiting professor of
dance.
Performance proceeds benefit the Lucy Isacco Sack Dance
