Goals and Competencies
Slippery Rock University's Master of Education in School Counseling Program prepares the student to function as a counselor, consultant, and coordinator. As a counselor, she/he facilitates self-understanding and self-acceptance within the context of both individual and group counseling and classroom guidance. As a consultant, she/he interprets the needs and concerns of children to administrators, faculty, and parents in both group and individual settings; and finally as a coordinator; she/he integrates school and community resources. SRU's School Counseling Program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM

Students seeking a Master of Education Degree (M.Ed.) in School Counseling are required to complete the program as outlined below.

CORE I - Basic Knowledge (15 credit hours)
- CDev 613 Introduction to School Counseling
- CDev 621 Social and Cultural Diversity
- CDev 610 Life-span Development Psychology
- CDev 614 Techniques of Counseling
- CDev 670 Counseling Theory
Students may not take Core IV coursework until they have completed Core I coursework.
CORE II - Professional Knowledge (15 credit hours)
- CDev 603 Career Counseling and Development
- CDev 611 Family Counseling
- CDev 612 Group Counseling
- CDev 618 Systems of Adaptive Behavior in Youth
- CDev 685 Youth Counseling
CORE III -Related Professional Knowledge (12 Credit Hours)
- SEFE 679 Psychology of Learning & Instruction ~ Can be taken with School Counseling Practicum (704) but must be completed prior to School Counseling Internship (750)
- CDev 680 Principles of Appraisal ~ Can be taken with School Counseling Practicum (704) but must be completed prior to School Counseling Internship (750)
- CDev 699 Research and Program Assessment ~ Can be taken with or after School Counseling Internship (750)
- 3 credit elective (consult with advisor) ~ Can be taken with or after School Counseling Internship (750). Recommended elective options include Foundations of Addiction (626), Models of Adaptive Behavior (607), departmental special topics courses (e.g., Human Sexuality & Ethics in the Helping Professions), and courses within the Special Education Department (88), including Advanced Study of Exceptional Persons (602), Special Education Law (611) Contemporary Issues in Special Education (620)
CORE IV -Fieldwork (9 Credit Hours)
- CDev 704 School Counseling Practicum (3 Credits) (100 hours total)
- CDev 750 School Counseling Internship (6 Credits) (600 hours total)
Students must successfully complete CDev 704, School Counseling Practicum, prior to enrolling in CDev 750, School Counseling Internship.
Students must have a minimum of a 3.00 QPA prior to taking Comprehensive Examination and may take CDev 750 or CDev 704 during the semester in which Comprehensive Examination is taken.
Students may seek the program’s endorsement for certification at both the elementary & secondary levels by doing completing 300 of their internship hours in work with students in grades 7-12, and 300 hours of their internship hours on work with students in grades k-6.
Students have the option of taking 2, 3, or 6 credits of School Counseling Internship (750) during a semester. Thus, students may complete their School Counseling Internship (750) in one semester, two, or three semesters.
The School Counseling Program Coordinator must approve internship & practicum settings.
