SRU DANCE DEPARTMENT’S FALL CONCERT SHOWCASES
EIGHT STUDENT
CHOREOGRAPHERS
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– The top eight dance pieces developed by student
choreographers in Slippery Rock University’s dance program
will be showcased in the department’s annual “Fall
Concert.” The program includes three eastern Indian works by
students in the “World Dance” course.
The
concert is scheduled for 3 and 8 p.m., Dec. 7 and 3 p.m. Dec. 8 in
Swope Recital Hall. Tickets are $2
general admission at the door. The program is coordinated by
Jennifer Keller, assistant professor of dance and recipient of the
first Charles Zuzak Award and the Pittsburgh Magazine’s Harry
Schwalb Excellence in the Arts Award.
Students in guest faculty member Jaya Mani’s
“World Dance” course will present the Indian
works.
SRU’s
dance program includes 91 dance majors and 50 dance minors.
Keller explains that more than 20 student pieces are developed over
an academic year with eight selected by audition for the fall
performance.
Choreographers
include Krista Harvey of Wilcox, Francie Lloyd of Monongahela,
Nicole McCandless, West Sunbury, Felicia Petro and Jennifer Roe
both of New Castle, Anita Reda, Pittsburgh, and Rosie Trump of New
Stanton. Their themes will cover new terrain with gender and
identity issues, the union of dance and video, liturgical dance,
abstract group designs, and womens’ strength and
physicality.
Musical selections cross genres from pop artist Tori
Amos to on-stage vocalizations as well as selections by the Blue
Man Group.
